Video: What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure is a way of preventing credit card fraud and chargebacks when making payments online.

When you’re processing payments, you’ll put your card details in, and your bank’s box might pop up (like the one on the screen). You’ll be asked to put in either your password, which might the sixth, seventh or eighth character to identify yourself, or you might also get a text message from your bank containing an authorisation code that you have to put in.

Transactions that have gone through this process are classed as, “as secure as chip-and-PIN”, as only you should know these pieces of information. This means once the payment has been processed, it cannot be charged back.
